Message March 22, 2020, 4th Sunday in lent, “ The Lord Is My Shepherd”
Sermon Message by Pastor Brad Sisk

Grace, peace, and mercy to you from God the Father almighty and the Son our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Centuries before Jesus preached the Psalmist wrote in the 23rd Psalm, “The LORD is my Shepherd, I shall not want… forever.” Keep that in mind as we hear our lesson today.

Our lesson for today is recorded by John in Chapter 9:1-41 and I’m going to read just a portion of this today.

As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, ‘It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.’ Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So, he went and washed and came back seeing…. He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. Jesus said, “For judgment, I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” … (ESV)

The trouble that we see in the text is those religious leaders in that place and at that time could see but they weren’t seeing. They did not recognize Jesus as the Messiah. The ones in this story did not understand his sayings. They rejected his guidance. The other trouble that we see is that illness and troubles were misjudged at that time and in that culture. They were misjudged. It was common to think that if somebody had an illness or disease that must be the result of their sin. Another problem that we see is accountability, not the accountability of sinners this time but the accountability of the righteous leaders. Jesus was holding them accountable because they had the ability to see but they didn’t.

But Jesus is full of grace he takes the time to expose selective seeing. First, he pointed out to his own disciples that if somebody’s sick it doesn’t mean that it was necessarily caused by sin. It could very well mean, and it did, in that case, mean that this is an opportunity for God to act and show God’s great power and grace and love. An opportunity for God’s work. Jesus out of grace is offering sight to those who will confess that they do not see. Those who can see but don’t want to see and don’t confess that could miss God’s grace.
But those who can see and for whatever reason, they’re having trouble seeing or those who can’t see and all of them that will confess that to him will receive his help that he is offering–his help to see if you’re blind. Jesus stated according to the John 9 text that he is the “light of the world” and light is for seeing.

These lessons by Jesus Christ were recorded for future generations such as us. So, let’s take a look at this. Do we ever have a problem with seeing or understanding what’s going on around us? Right now, we’re faced with a pandemic worldwide and an epidemic in the US with something called the Coronavirus. What Kind of thoughts do you and I have about this? What do we think God is doing? Are we tempted to think of this as some sort of Judgment of God? Or, could this be an opportunity for God to show Great power and grace and love. Could this just be a disease that was not caused by anyone’s particular sins?

The trouble that you and I run into is that even though we’ve been given the ability to see sometimes we don’t see or understand. We can misjudge illness and troubles around us. And, if we continue in that that can be a problem for us both now and in Eternity.

But Jesus is full of grace. And he has exposed are selective seeing by giving us lessons like we learn as recorded in the gospel according to John Chapter 9. Jesus has taught us through these lessons and if you think back through our own experiences that these troubles and even illnesses, even great ones, our opportunities for our loving and gracious God to show us the work of God and God’s power and God’s love and grace as God gives us gifts of faith and of healing both now and in eternity–and also knowledge and technology to give us Power over this virus eventually. For now, it’s our prayer and the power of knowledge by making some changes and the way we are the church and in the way we live our lives, just temporarily. Although, it may seem like a long time.
Scripture tells us that we are not to fear, but to have faith, and to act wisely. So that’s All we are doing right now is praying in faith and taking these wise actions.

Paul writes to the Ephesians In chapter 5 verses 8 to 14 one of our readings for today that, “you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of the light.” And that summarizes and applies this whole message for us. Since we have the light let’s actually see and wait and act wisely and see the great work of our loving and compassionate Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Our call to action today can be found in the words that God gave to Samuel when he was dealing with a tough situation and God said, “… I will show you what you shall do…” (1 Samuel 16:1-13) let’s see what God wants us to do. Amen!

A little prayer: Heavenly Father we have trouble seeing and understanding especially when there is great trial and tribulation, such as there is right now. Please be patient with us and the Holy Spirit fill our hearts and our minds with the peace that surpasses all understanding. And, give us sight to understand what you’re up to and how you are blessing us. In Jesus Christ name we pray Amen

[Scripture quotes ESV]
